TKAM Blog Prompt

Did the ending of the novel surprise you?
If you were the author, would you have ended the story differently?
Explain.

The ending of the novel surprised me. I did not expect Bob Ewell to attack the children. I expected him to perhaps do something bad to the children, granted, but I did not expect he would go after them with a murderous intent. I was further surprised when Boo came to the children's rescue, even though I knew Boo's part in the story was not over, I did not imagine him to play a part that had a huge impact on the children's lives.

If I were the author, I don't think I would have ended the story differently. The ending was a good ending with a plot twist where Atticus needed to make a decision between his morals and his love for his son. One can see how Atticus was worried that Jem could have indeed killed Bob Ewell, and how he was faced with a moral dilemma with how he as a lawyer had to carry out justice which meant that his son would be persecuted and how he as a father had to protect his son. The sheriff offered a way out for him by convincing him that Bob Ewell had indeed fell on his knife and Jem had not killed him.

Dear Fu Yuan,

Very well written analysis of the ending of the novel with your surprise well expressed! However, i was thinking if you could stretch your imagination a little bit and think of an even better ending. All the best in doing so then!

Yours sincerely,
Chew Tianle
